Fire Operations Division
The Fire Operations Division consists of 21 engine companies, 8 ladder companies and 4 aircraft fire rescue units, (ARFF) all overseen by Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Summers. Under his immediate command are twelve Battalion Chiefs. These companies respond from 20 strategically located fire stations within the city. The city is divided into four fire districts commanded by four Battalion Chiefs each day.
Besides fire protection, other services provided by suppression include:
- Urban Search and Rescue, (high angle, water, trench, etc.)
- Extrications from automobile accidents, construction accidents, etc.
- Hazardous Materials
- Aircraft fire, rescue (ARFF)
- Water tanker
- Bomb Squad
Suppression is also responsible as first responders on trauma and medical calls. Each employee possesses EMT certification, and is able to provide basic life support.
Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Summers was promoted and appointed as the Operations Chief in 2007. He joined the Little Rock Fire Department in 1983 and in 1988 he was assigned to the Fire Marshals Office, now The Public Education and Community Outreach Division. He was promoted to Engineer in 1994 and selected to attend Little Rock’s Police Academy for Law Enforcement Certification as a Fire Marshal. Promoted to Captain in 1999 and returned to the Operations Division in 2000 after 12 years in the Fire Marshal’s office and assigned to Engine 7, one of the busiest engine companies in the city. In 2004 Chief Summers was upgraded to Acting Battalion Chief and assigned as the Acting Chief of the Training Division. Promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in 2005, Chief Summers was assigned to Battalion 9 located in the Northwest quadrant of the city and responsible for nine apparatus and 31 personnel. Chief Summers is a member of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Arson Investigators, Arkansas Fire Chiefs Association and the Black Chief Officers Committee.
